Growing Toward Tomorrow.
Where Brookfield Road meets the tracks,
you’ll find something special. The Village is where community comes to life — a walkable hub filled with one-of-a-kind shops, local businesses, and the kind of charm you just can’t manufacture. Whether you're meeting a friend or exploring with your family, you’ll feel the local vibe.
Origins: From Frontier Settlement to Thriving Village
The Village area of Brookfield, centered along Brookfield Road between North Avenue and Burleigh Road, stands as the historic heart of the community. In 1836, Robert Curran and his family became the first permanent settlers, clearing land for farming and laying the foundation for a growing community. By the 1840 Census, the population had reached 148, necessitating the establishment of essential services such as schools and churches.
Preservation and Progress
Today, the Village area continues to thrive, balancing preservation with progress. Efforts to maintain the area's historic integrity are evident in the careful restoration of buildings and the promotion of local businesses that honor the Village's heritage. The community's commitment to preserving its unique identity ensures that the Village of Brookfield remains a vibrant and cherished part of Wisconsin's history.
The arrival of the Watertown Plank Road in the 1840s, followed by the construction of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad in 1850, transformed the Village into a hub of commerce and transportation. The intersection of two rail lines led to the creation of Brookfield Junction, with the first train depot built in 1853 and a second in 1867, which still stands today
